Editorial principles

There is more behind a short card.

A memorable quotation may have the wrong name attached. A surprising fact may need a qualification. Background and source notes help you understand what a card says and where it comes from.

A little more context

The short card is a starting point. Open it to read the background, an explanation or the story behind the words.

Clear attribution

We distinguish traditional sayings from named quotations and flag uncertain attribution. Source links let you read further and check the evidence.

Open by default

Browse cards, search the archive and explore topics on the website without an account. In the app, you can also save favourites and create your own cards.

English and Turkish

Cards are available in English and Turkish. Where both versions exist, the website presents them together.

Visual direction

Illustrations and historical pictures

Many card images are illustrations. They are there to accompany the words, and should not be treated as documentary evidence. Archive photographs and reproductions are identified and credited where used; source links support the text.
