The idea in context
The wall is long, but it is also narrow and often close in colour to the surrounding land. From orbit, visibility depends on conditions and magnification, not just fame. This matters because scale on a map does not equal visibility to the eye. The lesson is useful everywhere: a repeated fact can feel true before it is checked.
