Mount Tambora’s 1815 eruption cooled the globe enough that 1816 became known as the “year without a summer.”

Why it matters

The idea in context

Tambora blasted material into the atmosphere, affecting sunlight and climate patterns far from Indonesia. Crop failures, cold summers and hardship followed in many regions. This matters globally because Earth systems are connected across distance. The so-what: a local catastrophe can become a planetary event.
