The Eiffel Tower can stand about 15 centimetres taller in summer because heat makes its iron expand.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Materials expand and contract as temperature changes. For a structure as tall as the Eiffel Tower, tiny changes across many metal parts can add up to visible centimetres. This matters because engineering must account for weather, not just weight. The so-what: even monuments are moving with the day.
