The story behind the card
The official Charlie Chaplin website gives Chaplin's own handwritten notes as the source of this line; it is sometimes tied, wrongly, to his 1940 New York Times article defending The Great Dictator. The sentence fits how he worked. Until The Great Dictator, Chaplin never filmed from a finished script: he had sets built, tried ideas out in front of the camera and reshot until scenes worked. On The Kid (1921) he shot 53 takes for every one he used.
