All this struggle just for life to end on a random day.

The story behind the card

No author is known for this line; it circulates online as a modern thought. The sting is in the word “random”: a life's effort is long, while its end keeps no appointment. Ancient philosophers argued that facing this plainly is useful rather than gloomy. In On the Shortness of Life, written around AD 49, the Roman philosopher Seneca says life is not short; we waste much of it, and used well it is long enough. The Latin reminder memento mori, “remember that you will die”, belongs to the same tradition.
