Carbon can form diamond, graphite and graphene because the same atoms can bond in different structures with radically different properties.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Diamond is hard and transparent; graphite is soft and dark; graphene is a one-atom-thick sheet with remarkable strength and conductivity. The atoms are carbon in each case, but their arrangement changes everything. It is chemistry's quiet life lesson: what you are made of matters, but how you are connected matters too.
