A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain billions of microorganisms, turning dirt into a crowded living system.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Soil is not dead dust. Bacteria, fungi, archaea and tiny animals help cycle nutrients, build structure and support plant life. The exact count varies by soil, but the scale can be enormous. This matters globally because food systems begin underfoot. The lesson: what looks ordinary may be the infrastructure of life.
