The idea in context
This comes from Epictetus's Enchiridion, a compact Stoic handbook. Its practical frame is control: separate what is yours to choose from what is only yours to meet. Epictetus is not asking for passivity, but for consent to reality. Work with what arrives before wasting strength denying it.
