The story behind the card
This is the best-known sentence of Walden (1854), from its second chapter, 'Where I Lived, and What I Lived For'. From 4 July 1845, Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) spent two years, two months and two days in a one-room cabin he built beside Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts. The sentence goes on: he wanted to learn what life had to teach, and not find, when he came to die, that he had not lived. He was never cut off from the world; he walked into town every day or two.
