Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.
Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan, 1892
The story behind the card
The line comes from the third act of Lady Windermere's Fan, which opened at the St James's Theatre in London on 20 February 1892. Late at night in Lord Darlington's rooms, men trade witty remarks. Cecil Graham teases Lord Augustus, known as Tuppy, saying that experience is the name Tuppy gives to his mistakes; Dumby widens the joke to everyone. Wilde had used the idea before, in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish writer whose plays mocked the polite hypocrisy of London society.

Söz, Lady Windermere'in Yelpazesi'nin üçüncü perdesinde geçer. Oyun ilk kez 20 Şubat 1892'de Londra'daki St James's Tiyatrosu'nda sahnelendi. Gece geç saatte Lord Darlington'ın evinde toplanan erkekler birbirine laf yetiştirir. Cecil Graham, “Tuppy” diye çağrılan Lord Augustus'a takılır: Deneyim, Tuppy'nin kendi hatalarına verdiği addır.
