The idea in context
From the same 1857 address in which Douglass declared that power concedes nothing without a demand. Having freed himself from slavery, he distrusted the idea that justice arrives quietly on its own. Progress, he insisted, is always paid for with struggle — those who want change without conflict want the crop without ploughing the ground.
