Deep-sea hydrothermal vents support ecosystems without sunlight, using chemical energy from Earth’s interior instead.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Around hydrothermal vents, microbes use chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide to build food webs for worms, shellfish and other organisms. The discovery changed the geography of life: sunlight was no longer the only possible foundation for an ecosystem. That idea now reaches from the ocean floor to the search for life beyond Earth.
