A revealing case: nothing Hypatia said survives — the ancient sources describe her but preserve no quotations. This line was written by the American author Elbert Hubbard in his Little Journeys series (1908), where he freely invented speeches for her. It endures because the thought deserves an author: reserving the right to think, even wrongly, is the precondition of ever thinking well.
