The idea in context
Borges was made director of Argentina's National Library in 1955. By then an inherited eye disease had taken most of his sight, and he could no longer read the books he was now in charge of — some 800,000 of them. The poem calls this God's magnificent irony: granting him books and night in the same gesture. He learned poems by heart instead, and dictated the rest of his work.
