The story behind the card
Langston Hughes became one of the leading voices of the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of Black American art and writing in 1920s New York. He was twenty-one when 'Dreams' was published in 1923, and had already left Columbia University after a year of being treated as an intruder there. Around that time he worked as a delivery boy, as a mess boy on a freighter to West Africa and in the kitchen of a Paris nightclub. The poem is only eight short lines and does not promise that dreams will come true: only that a life without them cannot get off the ground.

Langston Hughes, 1920'lerde New York'ta Siyah Amerikalıların sanatta ve edebiyatta büyük bir çıkış yaptığı Harlem Rönesansı'nın önde gelen şairlerinden biri oldu. “Düşler” 1923'te yayımlandığında yirmi bir yaşındaydı.
