The story behind the card

The saying circulates as an African proverb, though no language or people has been identified for this wording. Psychologists have a name for the habit it warns against: the ostrich effect, avoiding information that is useful but unwelcome, such as not checking your bank balance after spending a lot. Studies of investors in Sweden and the United States found that they looked at their portfolios more often when markets were rising than when they were falling. The name rests on a myth: ostriches do not bury their heads in sand.
