The story behind the card

The Chinese proverb runs “qián rén zāi shù, hòu rén chéng liáng”: those before us plant the trees, those after us enjoy the shade. A form of it was listed among everyday sayings in 1751, in Zhai Hao's collection Tongsu bian. The thought is older still: the Roman statesman Cicero, in his essay On Old Age, quotes the comic poet Caecilius Statius on a farmer who plants trees to benefit another generation. It suits any work done for later generations, from schools to forests.
