The story behind the card

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 short verses of the Buddha's teaching, preserved in Pali, an ancient Indian language. Verses 121 and 122 warn against thinking lightly of a small wrong, as if it could never catch up with you: a water jar fills drop by drop, and a fool fills with wrongdoing little by little. The same is true of small good deeds, which slowly fill the wise. The verses apply the image to what people do, not to money.

No one saves us but ourselves.

This line comes from “Ourselves”, a short rhymed poem by Paul Carus (1852–1919), a German-American writer who helped introduce Buddhism to Western readers; it is the poem's fifth line in the enlarged 1907 edition of his book The Dharma. It is a free adaptation, not a translation of any single verse. Carus drew on the Dhammapada, a collection of the Buddha's sayings: verse 165 says that purity and impurity depend on oneself and no one can purify another, and verse 276 says that you must make the effort yourselves; the Buddhas only show the way.

Qawwali is the devotional music of the Sufis of South Asia. A lead singer sings a line of poetry, a chorus answers, and handclaps, harmonium and drums build the repetition up until the whole gathering is swept along together.

Qawwali grew up at Sufi shrines and gatherings in South Asia, where music is meant to draw listeners closer to God. The tradition is usually traced to the poet and musician Amir Khusrau (1253–1325) of Delhi. The words are Sufi poems in Urdu, Persian, Punjabi or Hindi. The lead singer may dwell on a single line for minutes, shifting its emphasis and improvising around it, while the chorus repeats it and the audience responds. In the twentieth century the Sabri Brothers and, above all, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan of Pakistan took qawwali to concert halls around the world; Nusrat's work with Western musicians in the 1990s brought it a global audience.

The Camino de Santiago, the network of pilgrim routes to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain, now draws hundreds of thousands of registered walkers a year. In October 2025 the city's Pilgrim Office issued that year's 500,000th Compostela, the certificate for completing the route.

Pilgrims have walked to Santiago since the Middle Ages, drawn by the tradition that the apostle James is buried in the cathedral. To earn a Compostela, walkers must cover at least the last 100 kilometres, or 200 by bicycle or on horseback, and collect stamps along the way. The modern revival has been dramatic: in 1985 only 690 people received the certificate; in 2024, 499,239 did. The Camino became the Council of Europe's first Cultural Route in 1987; the French Way became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, and the northern routes were added in 2015. Guidebooks, waymarks and films such as 'The Way' (2010) spread the word. Today's walkers come for faith, culture, sport or simply time to think.

The Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna, who lived in India around the 2nd century AD, taught that everything is 'empty': not that nothing exists, but that nothing exists entirely on its own. Things arise from causes, conditions and relationships, so none has a fixed nature independent of everything else.

Nāgārjuna is regarded as the founder of the Madhyamaka, or 'Middle Way', school of Buddhism, which he set out in his Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way. The Sanskrit word for emptiness is śūnyatā. He tied it to dependent origination, the Buddhist teaching that everything comes into being through other things. His middle way avoids two extremes: believing that things have permanent essences, and believing that nothing exists at all. A table is real, but only as wood, a maker and a use coming together.

In every religion there is love, yet love has no religion.

This sentence has not been found in Rumi's writings, but it echoes a story in his Masnavi, the long Persian poem he dictated in Konya. Moses hears a shepherd offering, in homely words, to mend God's shoes, comb his hair and bring him milk. Moses scolds him, and God rebukes Moses: he was sent to bring people closer, not to drive them away. God's answer includes the line “The religion of love is apart from all religions.” When Rumi died in 1273, Christians and Jews joined his mourners.
