The story behind the card
English proverb collections list this saying as Polish, and sometimes as Indian, but no original has been traced in Polish or in any Indian language. Yiddish has a rhyming cousin: a guest for a while sees for a mile. Anyone who has had visitors knows the feeling: after a year in a flat you stop seeing the cracked tile or the crooked picture, and a friend spots both before taking off their coat. That is the proverb's point: fresh eyes notice what familiarity hides.
