The story behind the card
Nietzsche wrote this on 22 February 1883 from Rapallo, on the Italian coast, to his loyal friend Franz Overbeck, a theologian at the University of Basel. He was very ill: his stomach could no longer take even sleeping draughts, and his nights were sleepless and tormented. His friendship with Lou Salomé had ended painfully the year before, and Richard Wagner, once his closest friend and later his opponent, had died in Venice nine days earlier. In the letter Nietzsche calls Wagner the fullest human being he ever knew, says the first part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra should already be at the printer's, and cries out: “No! This life! And I am the advocate of life!” He planned to move to Genoa, seek his health in strict solitude and go to the mountains when the season allowed. The card's sentence comes straight after these plans.

Nietzsche bu satırları 22 Şubat 1883'te, İtalya kıyısındaki Rapallo'dan yazdı. Mektup, Basel Üniversitesi'nde ilahiyat profesörü olan sadık dostu Franz Overbeck'e yazılmıştı. Çok hastaydı: Midesi uyku ilaçlarını bile kaldırmıyor, geceleri uykusuz ve acı içinde geçiyordu. Lou Salomé ile dostluğu bir önceki yıl kırgınlıkla bitmişti. Dokuz gün önce de Richard Wagner Venedik'te ölmüştü; Wagner bir zamanlar en yakın dostuydu, sonra Nietzsche onun karşısına geçmişti. Nietzsche mektupta Wagner'i tanıdığı en dolu insan diye anar, Böyle Buyurdu Zerdüşt'ün ilk kısmının çoktan baskıya girmiş olması gerektiğini yazar ve şöyle haykırır: “Hayır! Bu hayat! Üstelik ben hayatın savunucusuyum!” Cenova'ya taşınmayı, tam bir yalnızlık içinde sağlığını aramayı, mevsim elverince dağlara gitmeyi planlar. Karttaki cümle bu planların hemen ardından gelir.
