The story behind the card
The line circulates in Spanish and English under Pablo Neruda's name, but no poem, letter or interview containing it has been found. Pablo Neruda was the pen name of the Chilean poet Ricardo Neftalí Reyes (1904–1973), who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. His Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair (1924) is still the best-selling book of poetry in Spanish. Later he wrote One Hundred Love Sonnets for Matilde Urrutia, the singer who had nursed him through an illness in Mexico and later became his wife.
