The story behind the card
The American poet Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) wrote this poem around 1861 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Hope is a small bird perched in the soul, singing a tune without words that never stops. It sings sweetest in a storm, and the poem ends on its quietest point: in the coldest land and on the strangest sea, it never once asked her for a crumb. Dickinson published only about ten of her nearly 1,800 poems in her lifetime; this one appeared in 1891, five years after her death.
