The story behind the card
This line comes near the end of The Bell Jar, the only novel by the American poet Sylvia Plath (1932–1963). Its heroine, Esther Greenwood, spends a summer at a New York magazine, then sinks into severe depression and months of hospital care, as Plath did after her summer at Mademoiselle in 1953. The bell jar is Esther's image for her illness: a glass dome that cuts her off from the world. She hears her heartbeat this way at a friend's funeral, shortly before doctors decide whether she can leave hospital.
