All the fibre we eat comes from plants — fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, beans and nuts. Meat, fish and dairy contain none at all.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Fibre is the part of plant food the body cannot fully digest, and that is exactly what makes it useful: it feeds gut bacteria, slows digestion and helps everything move through. Because it exists only in plants, a day with no fruit, veg, beans or wholegrains is usually a day with almost no fibre.
