In true fresco, pigment is applied to wet plaster so the colour becomes part of the wall as the surface dries.

The idea in context
Fresco demands speed and planning because the artist works while the plaster is still wet. Once dry, the pigment is chemically bound into the wall rather than merely sitting on top. In churches, palaces and public buildings, beauty had to survive weather, smoke, hands and centuries; technique was part of that survival.
