Founded under the Ptolemies in the 3rd century BC, the Library of Alexandria aimed to gather a copy of every book in the known world; ships entering the harbour reportedly had to surrender their scrolls to be copied. Its loss was not one dramatic fire but a slow decline over centuries — through war, funding cuts and neglect — which is its quieter warning.
