The idea in context
This comes from the close of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, given in March 1865 as the Civil War neared its end — and just weeks before his assassination. Rather than gloat over near-victory, he called for healing: 'with malice toward none, with charity for all', the nation should bind up its wounds and finish the work of rebuilding together.
