The story behind the card

This English proverb is recorded in the physician Thomas Fuller's collection Gnomologia (1732), and a 1643 political declaration had already said that whoever stumbles without falling gains ground rather than losing it. The idea is simple: a small slip, like catching your foot on a loose step, is a warning that comes while there is still time to act. Safety engineers work the same way with 'near misses', studying small incidents that caused no harm in order to prevent serious accidents.
