Sound travels about four times faster in water than in air, letting whale calls and underwater signals carry differently through the sea.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Water is denser and less compressible than air, so sound waves move through it more quickly. This matters for marine animals, submarines, sonar, divers and ocean research. The personal comparison is strange: the sea is visually dark at depth, but acoustically active. The lesson: every environment has its own way of carrying messages.

Her ortamın mesaj taşıma biçimi farklıdır.
