The idea in context
A compressed modern rendering of an idea Aristotle develops in the Metaphysics (Book VIII): a whole whose parts are unified is something over and above the parts laid side by side. A syllable is more than its letters; a body more than its organs; a team more than its players. The phrase became the founding slogan of systems thinking and Gestalt psychology.
