The story behind the card
Aristotle never wrote this exact sentence. It compresses an idea from his Metaphysics (Books VII and VIII, 4th century BC): a true whole is not a heap of parts but something more, just as a syllable is more than its letters. The modern wording spread in the 20th century through systems thinking and Gestalt psychology, the study of how we perceive whole patterns. Kurt Koffka, one of Gestalt's founders, preferred to say the whole is 'other than' the sum of its parts.

Aristoteles bu cümleyi tam olarak böyle yazmadı. Söz, MÖ 4. yüzyılda yazdığı Metafizik'in VII. ve VIII. kitaplarındaki bir düşüncenin kısaltılmış hâlidir: Gerçek bir bütün, parçaların yığını değil, onlardan fazlasıdır; tıpkı bir hecenin harflerinden fazlası olması gibi. Bugünkü kalıp 20. yüzyılda sistem düşüncesiyle ve algının bütünleri nasıl kavradığını inceleyen Gestalt psikolojisiyle yaygınlaştı. Gestalt'ın kurucularından Kurt Koffka ise bütünün, parçaların toplamından “başka bir şey” olduğunu söylemeyi yeğliyordu.
