The idea in context
Authentic in substance: in the Analects (2.17) Confucius tells a disciple, 'When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it — this is knowledge.' The modern wording tightens the original. It remains the best one-line defence against the most expensive of errors: confident ignorance.
