Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them.

Epictetus, Enchiridion

Philosophy

Why it matters

The idea in context

This comes from Epictetus's Enchiridion, a compact Stoic handbook. Its practical frame is control: separate what is yours to choose from what is only yours to meet. Epictetus (c. 50–135 AD) was a Stoic philosopher born into slavery, who taught that we cannot control events, only our response to them.

Epiktetos, Enchiridion
