The story behind the card

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) was a Serbian-American engineer whose inventions helped make alternating-current (AC) electricity, the kind that reaches homes today, practical. In April 1927 the Belgrade newspaper Politika published an interview in which he was asked about patent disputes, including who invented radio. As reported, he answered that the future should judge each person by their work: the present belonged to his rivals, the future to him. His name now marks the tesla, the unit used to measure magnetic fields, and a crater on the Moon.

We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.

These are the last words of 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence', the paper Alan Turing (1912–1954) published in the journal Mind in 1950. It opens with the question 'Can machines think?' and replaces it with the imitation game, later called the Turing test: a judge exchanges typed messages with a person and a machine and tries to tell which is which. Turing then answers nine objections, one of which he named after Ada Lovelace, who had written that a machine can only do what we know how to order it to do. During the Second World War he had led the Bletchley Park team that broke German naval Enigma messages.

Kerb cuts, the small ramps where a pavement meets the road, were won by disabled campaigners for wheelchair users. They now help anyone pushing a pram, pulling a suitcase or wheeling a trolley.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, installed some of the first kerb cuts in the 1940s, in a pilot scheme proposed by the lawyer and war veteran Jack H. Fischer to help disabled veterans get to work. In the 1970s the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, California, a group run by disabled people and co-founded by Ed Roberts, pushed for cuts along Telegraph and Shattuck Avenues, creating one of the first continuous step-free routes through an American city. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 later made kerb ramps a legal requirement on new and altered streets across the United States. In 2017 the policy advocate Angela Glover Blackwell named the wider pattern the 'curb-cut effect': a change made for one group often ends up helping almost everyone.

A Passive House is a building designed like a thermos: carefully sealed, insulated and ventilated so it wastes very little energy.

Passive House is a performance standard, not an architectural style: any building that meets its measured limits can qualify. The idea grew from a 1988 conversation between Bo Adamson of Lund University in Sweden and the German physicist Wolfgang Feist. Four terraced houses built in Darmstadt-Kranichstein, Germany, in 1990–91 are usually cited as the first examples. Feist founded the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt in 1996 to certify buildings. The best-known limits are a yearly heating demand of no more than 15 kilowatt-hours per square metre of floor, and an airtightness test in which a fan pressurises the building and no more than 0.6 of its volume of air may leak out in an hour. Fresh air comes in through a ventilation unit that warms it with the heat of the stale air going out.

A Repair Café is a free neighbourhood event where volunteers help people mend broken lamps, kettles, clothes and bikes. Things are fixed instead of thrown away, and owners learn repair skills along the way.

The first Repair Café was held in Amsterdam on 18 October 2009, organised by the Dutch journalist Martine Postma as a local sustainability project. It drew so many people that she set up a foundation to help others copy the idea, and there are now more than 2,500 Repair Cafés worldwide, from village halls to city libraries. Visitors bring a broken item and sit with a volunteer, such as an electrician, tailor or bike mechanic, to fix it together; the repair is free, though donations are welcome. Many cafés also record what came in and whether it could be fixed, building evidence about which products are hard to repair.

A windcatcher, badgir in Persian, is a tall tower on a roof that catches passing breezes and channels them down into the rooms below. It has cooled houses in hot, dry places such as Iran for centuries, without any machinery.

The top of the tower has openings that face the wind. Air pushed in is forced down a shaft into the house, while warm air leaves through openings on the sheltered side; on still days the sun-warmed tower works like a chimney and draws air through the rooms. Yazd, a desert city in central Iran listed by UNESCO in 2017, is famous for its many windcatchers, and the one in its Dowlatabad Garden, about 33 metres high, is often described as the tallest in the world. Paired with covered water reservoirs called ab-anbars, windcatchers helped keep drinking water cool. Similar towers are found from Egypt to the Persian Gulf, and architects now study them for low-energy cooling.
