Why it matters
The idea in context
A paraphrase of a genuine Orwell line. In “The Freedom of the Press” — his preface to Animal Farm, suppressed in 1945 and only published in 1972 — he wrote: “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” He was attacking not censors but the subtler enemy: self-censorship among people free to speak.
