The story behind the card
In Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) this is a slogan of the Party that rules Oceania, and it continues: 'who controls the present controls the past.' The hero, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth rewriting old newspaper articles so that the record always agrees with the Party's latest line. The novel shows a totalitarian state, one that seeks control over every part of public and private life, turning memory itself into a tool of power. George Orwell (1903–1950) was an English writer who also wrote Animal Farm.
