The idea in context
This one is real, and the earlier note calling it unsourced was wrong: Gandhi published it in Young India on 5 March 1925, in a passage arguing that a person becomes great exactly in the degree to which they work for the welfare of others. The mechanism holds up. Self-consciousness dissolves in absorbing, useful work — identity turns out to be a by-product rather than a project.
