The idea in context
One of the most quoted “Confucius” sayings — and one of the most certainly modern: it appears nowhere before the 1980s, in American career-advice circles. The Analects actually cuts against it: Confucius praises duty and discipline within work, not the discovery of effortless passion. Loving your work is a fine outcome; the fantasy that love makes it stop being work is the part he would have questioned.
