The story behind the card
Rilke wrote this on 16 July 1903 from Worpswede, an artists' village near Bremen. It is the fourth of ten letters to Franz Xaver Kappus, a young cadet at the Theresian Military Academy south of Vienna who was torn between poetry and the army. The letter goes on to urge him to live the questions now, so that one day, perhaps without noticing, he may live his way into the answer. Kappus published the letters in 1929, three years after Rilke's death.
