Why it matters
The idea in context
Many maps arrive as finished surfaces, but OpenStreetMap is closer to a public notebook that never stops being amended. A footpath, a clinic entrance, a missing bridge or a flood-damaged road can matter urgently to the person on the ground. Open data turns local knowledge into infrastructure.
