The story behind the card
Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 161 to 180 and wrote the Meditations as private notes to himself, in Greek, partly while on campaign. He followed Stoicism, the philosophy that a good life depends on our own judgements, not on events outside our control. A popular version of this line adds 'it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking'. Those words are not in the text, but they sum up the passage: whatever skills you lack, being free and good stays in your own hands.

Marcus Aurelius, MS 161-180 yılları arasında Roma İmparatorluğu'nu yönetti. Düşünceler'i kendine tuttuğu kişisel notlar olarak Yunanca yazdı; bir kısmını seferdeyken kaleme aldı. Stoacıydı: Bu felsefeye göre iyi bir hayat, dışımızdaki olaylara değil, kendi yargılarımıza bağlıdır. Sözün yaygın biçimine “hepsi senin içinde, düşünme biçimindedir” diye bir ek yapılır. Bu ek metinde yoktur, ama pasajın özünü iyi anlatır: Hangi beceriden yoksun olursa olsun, özgür ve iyi bir insan olmak insanın kendi elindedir.
