The Rosetta Stone carries the same royal decree in hieroglyphs, Demotic and Greek. That repetition gave scholars the key to read Egyptian hieroglyphs again.

Why it matters

The idea in context

The stone is only a fragment of a larger stela, but the accident of survival was enough. Greek could still be read; hieroglyphs could not. By matching the decree across the three scripts, scholars could test names, sounds and signs until a lost writing system opened. It is a reminder that translation is not secondary work. Sometimes it is the hinge on which a civilisation becomes audible again.
