Pointillist painters placed separate dots of colour side by side, trusting the viewer’s eye to blend them into light.

Seurat, Signac and optical colour

ArtScience

Why it matters

The idea in context

The dots are not decoration. They are a theory of seeing. Instead of mixing pigments into a duller average on the palette, Seurat and Signac let small touches of colour vibrate beside one another so the mixture happens in perception. It makes the viewer a collaborator. The painting is not fully assembled until the eye arrives.
