She was no complete beginner — for years she had written a farm column for a Missouri paper — but the books were something new: her frontier childhood of the 1870s and 80s, recalled in her sixties with a clear, warm plainness. Readers sometimes assume a life's defining work must announce itself early. Wilder's waited until most people's careers are ending, and then outlived them all.

From the 1910s to the 1970s, roughly six million Black Americans left the U.S. South for northern, midwestern and western cities, reshaping work, politics, music and family life.

The Great Migration was not just movement from one region to another; it was a mass refusal of closed futures. People left Jim Crow violence, debt, exclusion and limited work, then built new lives in cities that often met them with new forms of segregation. Out of that pressure came altered politics, newspapers, churches, literature, blues, jazz and neighbourhoods. A nation changed because millions insisted that geography should not decide dignity.

Fe del Mundo founded the Philippines' first paediatric hospital in 1957 and built programmes that carried child healthcare, training and disease prevention beyond its walls.

Del Mundo returned from postgraduate training in the United States as war reached the Philippines and cared for sick children in an internment camp. Frustrated by the limits of public institutions, she sold property to open the Children's Memorial Hospital in Quezon City, then linked specialist care with rural health workers and rehydration teams. She researched infectious disease, trained generations of clinicians and wrote a foundational Philippine paediatrics text. Her hospital was a building; her real design was a network of care.

Toni Morrison published 'The Bluest Eye' in 1970 at 39, written in the hours before dawn while she edited other people's books by day and raised two sons on her own. In 1993 she became the first Black woman awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

'Writing before dawn began as a necessity — I had small children,' she later told the Paris Review. The necessity became a ritual: she liked to watch the light arrive with coffee, before the day claimed her. Morrison spent nearly twenty years as a book editor, championing other Black writers, while building one of the great bodies of American fiction in the margins of her own mornings.

Akhmatova spent seventeen months in the queues outside a Leningrad prison, waiting for news of her son. One day a woman with blue-tinged lips recognised her, leaned in and whispered the question — everyone in those queues whispered. This exchange became the preface to 'Requiem', her poem cycle about the terror. For years it existed nowhere but in the memories of a few trusted friends, who learned it by heart so that no page could be found.

Nizam al-Mulk's Siyasatnama, the Book of Government, sets out in fifty chapters how a ruler should handle religion, soldiers, money, courtiers and informers.

It was written late, by a man who had already done the job, and it reads that way: less theory than accumulated practice, illustrated with stories of rulers who got it right or badly wrong. It is unsentimental about power — the ruler's authority should be absolute, the informants should be good, the treasury should be watched. Written nine centuries ago about a vanished empire, it survives because most of what it describes is not medieval at all.
