Violet Jessop was aboard the Olympic when it was rammed, aboard the Titanic when it sank, and aboard the Britannic when it went down too. She survived all three and kept going to sea for another thirty years.

Jessop was a stewardess on the Olympic in 1911 when a warship struck it, a stewardess on the Titanic in 1912 when she was put into a lifeboat holding a stranger's baby, and a nurse on the hospital ship Britannic in 1916 when it hit a mine in the Aegean. Sucked towards the Britannic's still-turning propellers, she jumped from her lifeboat and struck her head on the keel — an injury she later credited a thick head of hair with softening. She went back to work on liners and retired only in the 1950s, to a cottage in Suffolk.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was on a business trip in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Burned and half-deaf, he travelled home the next day — to Nagasaki, arriving in time for the second bomb.

An engineer for Mitsubishi, Yamaguchi was three kilometres from the Hiroshima hypocentre. He made it back to Nagasaki and was describing the blast to a disbelieving supervisor on 9 August when the second flash filled the window. He lived to 93. In 2009 Japan formally recognised him as the only official double survivor — though others were caught by both — and he spent his last years speaking against nuclear weapons, saying his survival appeared to have been given to him as a task.

Abraham Lincoln's son was pushed off a crowded train platform and pulled back to safety by a stranger. The stranger was Edwin Booth — brother of the man who would shoot his father.

Robert Todd Lincoln told the story himself in a letter of 1909. Waiting for a sleeping-car ticket at Jersey City, he was pressed against a moving carriage and dropped into the gap; a hand seized his collar and hauled him out. He turned and recognised Edwin Booth, the most celebrated American actor of the age. Neither knew what was coming. Within about a year or two Edwin's younger brother John Wilkes Booth shot the president at Ford's Theatre — and Edwin, told later of the rescue, is said to have taken some comfort from it.

Roy Sullivan, a park ranger in Virginia, was struck by lightning seven separate times between 1942 and 1977 and survived every one. It cost him a toenail, his eyebrows, and several hats set on fire.

Sullivan worked in Shenandoah National Park, high ground in a region of violent summer storms, which goes some way to explaining the first strike or two. Seven is another matter — the odds of being hit even once in a lifetime are roughly one in fifteen thousand. He grew wary of storms and reported that people began to avoid standing near him. He kept the burnt hats. Guinness still lists him as the human being struck by lightning more times than any other on record.

In 1971 a lightning strike tore apart an airliner over Peru. Juliane Koepcke, seventeen, fell three kilometres still strapped to her seat, landed alive in the rainforest, and walked for eleven days to find help.

She was the only one of 92 aboard to survive, with a broken collarbone and a gashed arm. Her parents were biologists who had raised her at a jungle research station, and her father's advice saved her: follow water downstream, because moving water leads to people. She waded and floated for eleven days, keeping to the river, and reached a hut where lumber workers found her. Werner Herzog — who had narrowly missed that same flight — later made a documentary with her about it.

In 1972 a bomb destroyed a Yugoslav airliner at 10,160 metres. Flight attendant Vesna Vulović fell in a section of the fuselage, landed in deep snow, and survived — the highest fall without a parachute anyone is known to have walked away from.

She was 22 and was not even meant to be on the flight — a scheduling mix-up put her aboard in place of another Vesna. Being trapped in a fuselage section, wedged by a food trolley, is thought to have slowed her fall, and the snow-covered slope she hit did the rest. She was in a coma for days and paralysed from the waist down for a time, but eventually walked again. She remembered nothing of the fall, and said afterwards she was never frightened of flying.

When his ship was torpedoed in 1942, Poon Lim drifted alone on a wooden raft in the South Atlantic for 133 days, catching fish with a hook made from a torch spring. It is still the longest recorded solo survival at sea.

A Chinese steward on a British merchant ship, Lim found a raft with a few tins of biscuit and some water. When those ran out he improvised: a fish hook from a torch spring, a knife from a biscuit tin, a canvas canopy to catch rain. He taught himself to swim to keep his strength. Ships and aircraft passed without seeing him. Brazilian fishermen found him at last, and he had lost only about nine kilos. He said afterwards he hoped no one would ever have to break his record.

When Alfred Nobel's brother died in 1888, a French paper is said to have mistaken it for Alfred's death and called him a merchant of death who grew rich finding new ways to kill. He is said to have read it, and rewritten his will.

Nobel invented dynamite, held 355 patents and owned armaments works, so the charge would have stung. The famous version of events is worth holding loosely: no original copy of the obituary has ever been found, and the Nobel Foundation notes he had been thinking about prizes for decades and was influenced by his friendship with the peace campaigner Bertha von Suttner. What is certain is the will he signed in 1895, leaving almost his whole fortune to reward those who had conferred the greatest benefit on humankind.

In 1942 the actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil patented a way to stop radio-controlled torpedoes being jammed, by hopping the signal across frequencies. The same principle underlies wifi, GPS and Bluetooth.

Lamarr was billed as the most beautiful woman in the world and was bored by the parts she was given; she kept an inventing table at home. The frequency-hopping idea came with a mechanism synchronised by piano rolls — Antheil's contribution — and the US Navy filed the patent away unused. It expired before it earned either of them anything. Related techniques became fundamental to secure and shared wireless communication, and she was finally inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014, fourteen years after her death.

Before John Glenn orbited Earth in 1962, he did not trust the electronic computer's numbers. He asked for Katherine Johnson to work the trajectory by hand — and said if she agreed the figures were right, he was ready to go.

Johnson was one of NASA's 'human computers', a Black mathematician working in a segregated division at Langley. She calculated trajectories for Alan Shepard's flight, Glenn's orbit and later Apollo 11, and helped work out the return path that brought Apollo 13's crew home. She kept working at NASA until 1986, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, and became widely known only late in life, after the book and film Hidden Figures.

James Dyson spent five years making prototype after prototype of a vacuum cleaner with no bag. The 5,127th worked. Every British manufacturer turned it down, so he manufactured it himself.

The idea came from a sawmill, where large cyclones spun dust out of the air. Dyson reasoned the same physics could replace the bag that clogs and loses suction. Manufacturers were not interested — the industry made steady money selling replacement bags, and a machine that needed none threatened that. He launched in Japan first, then in Britain, where it became the best-selling vacuum within a few years. He has since said the failures were the education, and that he learned nothing from the one that worked.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe brought a roaring electric guitar into gospel before rock and roll had a name, shaping the sound that later filled stadiums.

Tharpe came out of Black Pentecostal music with a voice built for church and a guitar attack that pointed straight at rock. The later story of the genre often centred men with louder publicity, but listen backwards and she is there first: bending sacred music through amplification, rhythm and showmanship. Influence is not always a straight line. Sometimes it is a current others learn to name later.

Lucy, the Australopithecus afarensis skeleton found in Ethiopia in 1974, showed that early human relatives walked upright long before large brains evolved.

Lucy matters because she gives deep time a body. Her bones are not a complete person, but they are enough to show a small hominin who moved through trees and across ground, combining ape-like and human-like traits. The revelation is quietly radical: walking on two legs was not the final polish of humanity. It was an early experiment, older than the brain that later tried to explain it.

The Medici Bank helped finance a family network that shaped Florence, joining credit, diplomacy, papal business and art patronage in fifteenth-century Europe.

The Medici story is often told in paintings, palaces and politics, but money kept the rooms lit. The bank's branches connected Florence with cities such as Rome, Venice, Bruges and London, moving value through bills, credit and trust. Its success helped make patronage possible; its decline showed how exposed finance becomes when family, politics and risk share the same table.

From the 1910s to the 1970s, roughly six million Black Americans left the U.S. South for northern, midwestern and western cities, reshaping work, politics, music and family life.

The Great Migration was not just movement from one region to another; it was a mass refusal of closed futures. People left Jim Crow violence, debt, exclusion and limited work, then built new lives in cities that often met them with new forms of segregation. Out of that pressure came altered politics, newspapers, churches, literature, blues, jazz and neighbourhoods. A nation changed because millions insisted that geography should not decide dignity.

Fazlur Rahman Khan transformed high-rise engineering with tube structural systems, making towers such as Chicago's John Hancock Center and Willis Tower more efficient against wind and gravity.

Khan's genius was to see that a tall building could behave less like a stack and more like a tube. By moving structural strength toward the perimeter, his systems resisted wind with less waste and opened new possibilities for height, form and economy. The skyline changed because an engineer thought structurally and humanly at once: buildings had to stand, but they also had to make room for life high in the air.

Zaha Hadid, the Baghdad-born architect and first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, used painting, geometry and fluid forms to expand the language of contemporary architecture.

Hadid's early drawings were not illustrations after design; they were part of the thinking. She used abstraction, fragmentation and movement to imagine buildings before software and contractors could easily follow. Later, built projects proved that the impossible-looking lines were not merely style. They were proposals for how people might move through space with less obedience to the box.

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's 1925 thesis showed that stars are dominated by hydrogen and helium, a conclusion resisted at first but foundational to modern astrophysics.

Payne-Gaposchkin looked at stellar spectra and saw a universe that did not match the assumptions around her. Her thesis found hydrogen and helium in overwhelming abundance, but the result seemed so radical that senior authority pushed her to understate it. The science survived the hesitation. A young astronomer had read the light correctly, and the stars turned out not to be Earth-like fires, but cosmic reservoirs of the simplest elements.

Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered that Cepheid variable stars reveal their intrinsic brightness through their pulsation periods, making them crucial distance markers for the universe.

Leavitt worked with photographic plates, not rockets or radio dishes, yet her insight expanded the universe. By noticing that Cepheid variables with longer periods were intrinsically brighter, she gave astronomers a way to compare true brightness with apparent brightness and calculate distance. Hubble later used that ladder to show galaxies rushing away. A patient pattern in glass plates became a measure for cosmic scale.
