The idea in context
Eight lines long, and the whole poem is an apology for having nothing. The speaker wishes he owned the embroidered cloths of heaven to lay at her feet; being poor, he has only his dreams. Yeats published it in 1899 under the name Aedh, one of three masks he used in that collection, and later quietly dropped the mask. He had proposed to Maud Gonne and been refused, and would be refused three more times.
