The idea in context
Faraday wrote this to himself, in a notebook, halfway through an experiment. The sentence goes on: 'and in such things as these experiment is the best test of such consistency.' That is the whole method in one breath — believe the strange thing is possible, then go and check. He had left school at thirteen, apprenticed to a bookbinder, and read the books he was sewing. The experiment he was chasing that day never worked.
