The philosopher and physician Ibn Sina asked, about a thousand years ago: imagine you were created in an instant, fully grown, floating in the air with your eyes covered and your limbs apart, touching nothing. Would you still know that you exist? Yes, he argued, and so the self must be something more than the body.

The story behind the card

Ibn Sina, known in Europe as Avicenna, was born near Bukhara in Central Asia in about 980, and his Canon of Medicine was taught in European universities for centuries. He set out this 'Floating Man' thought experiment in The Cure, in the part on the soul, in the early 11th century. His point was that a person with no sensations at all would still be aware of themselves. Readers often compare it with René Descartes' 'I think, therefore I am', written some six hundred years later.
