The story behind the card

Marx, the German philosopher and economist who later co-wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848), jotted this down in a notebook in 1845 as the last of eleven short “theses” criticising the philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach. They were not published until 1888, five years after his death, when Friedrich Engels printed them. The line means that understanding the world matters most as a basis for changing it, and it is carved on Marx's tomb in Highgate Cemetery, London.
