After a loss, the crowded days can give way to ordinary ones: groceries, laundry, dinner, a quiet evening. The day can look normal long before it feels normal. Grief can become especially lonely when it is no longer visible to everyone else.

The story behind the card

Grief counsellors often describe this pattern: visits, calls and meals cluster in the first days after a death, then taper off within weeks, long before the grief itself has eased. The gap can leave people feeling they should already be coping, or that they can no longer mention the loss. Bereavement charities often suggest that friends remember dates such as birthdays and anniversaries, when the loss is usually felt most.
